Class Summary for May 27, 2025 - Chapter-6 Slokas 1- 6 continued

Summarized by: Anuradha  Bhaskara

We started with our class with prayers followed by Pranayama and Meditation.
We recapped about what was covered in last class.
Recap: - Yogi and Gyana how are they different.
Yogi acts with non attachment or with no intention of karma Phala.
Gyana- acts with attitude of renunciation.
How can one grow to higher?  What does growing to higher mean?
How can one become Gyana from being a Yogi?
What is the purpose of the events?
We continued to discuss on how one can become gyani from yogi- this can be done via one practice of famer’s mentality or vyavasaya Budhi. Here the Sadhana becomes more intense.
As a farmers takes care of the plants or the farm. In the similar way being unattached to them things just taking care of them and nurturing them whether they grow well or grow for some time and fade away or don’t sprout is all dependent on various factors. In the similar way we can try and reach the state of Gyana from being a yogi.
We should remember the F (Frequency), I (Intensity) and R (Recovery time) of how we are working on the things.
Discussing on how to grow to higher- we went over few examples.
  • Few people Binge watch web series, instead of watching all the 12 or 14 episodes lets decide to halt anfter an episode or two  and the rest of the time try spending in watching spiritual lectures or videos or read some scriptures. This is all about moderation. Choosing shreyas vs Preyas. Working towards anything in the path of Brahman and see how we can work towards it.
  • Our discussion came on what if we are working with people with Lower energy. We need to understand that we cannot apply external lens to things. Our jobs or goal is not to go down and what strategies can be used to stick to our Swadharma.
We can try and bring the other person to the higher level but it’snot in our control is what we must learn and realize.
Karma Yoga and Karma Sannyasa Yoga both leads us to Dhayan Yoga.
In this chapter 6 verses 1-9 are general preparations to be practiced in Dhyana yoga.
In verse 5-6 – Atma is actually referred to the BMI and not the soul is what we must remember. We also need to understand that we need to help ourselves. This is possible with God’s/Bhagwan’s grace, Guru’s Grace and Shastra’s learning and understanding.

  • We then went over the PORT reduction method.
P- Possession (Possession could be mental, physical or psychological possessions).
O – Obligations (Obligations or responsibilities try not to add on to new obligations).
R – Relationships (If there is an empty or vacuum of a relationship in your life try not to fill it in).
T – Transactions (try to reduce the number of transactions).

This PORT reduction method helps us to go into becoming a Sanyasi.
Free will- A free will is like “I have a will to do certain thing”. We need to understand how we use this.
Self Confidence-
Self-Integration-
How can we bring all the senses to that point so that our mind does not wander- some techniques are
Being in Yoganidra- this is not sleeping but making sure the entire body is relaxed this is alert form of sleepiness.
Pranayama- Pranayama helps slowing the number of breathes we take and we exhale this helps in meditation.
Meditation- Meditation is a state of calmness and focusing on the Brahman. With mediation one can attain self-realization.
Experiencing Mystical- when one is in meditative state they experience the mystical things.
Meditation can be done by Shravanam-Mananam-Nidithyasanam
A karma yogi can be called as a person who sacrifices the “NiraAgni”
Vedic people keep the fire in their homes, this fire is used for cooking, lighting lamps and is also used for cremation when anyone in the family passes away.
NiraAgni- can be described as Physical attachments when we say Giving up of NiraAgni it means that we are giving up all the attachments like giving up of the fire which is used for all the purposes of day to day life.
Ashtanga Yogas- we touched briefly over what is Ashtanga Yogas.
Yama- 5 DoNots
Niyama- 5 Dos.
Asana- Posture.
Pranayama- Control of breathe.
PryatAahara- Withdrawal of Senses (Not the aahar or food, it is not related to food).

Dhyana- Concentration or meditation.
We need to know that the result of actions will come after the action is performed and not before the action or while the action is being performed.
We watched one of the Gurudev’s videos and we need to continue the rest in our next class.
Until next class
Hari Om
