Ch 8 – Aksharabrahma Yoga (the imperishable truth)

Introduction -

Verses 1–4 – Brahman, Atman & world
(Arjuna’s questions)
Verses 5–7 – As you think, so you become
Verses 8–14 – How to attain Brahman
Verses 15–22 – Rebirth & Beyond
Verses 23–28 – Return, non-return, Liberation

Meanings of verses – 1, 2, 3

Verse 1 -
Arjun said – O Supreme Lord, what is Brahman (Absolute Reality), what is Adhyatma (the individual soul) & what is karma? What is said to be Adhibhuta, & who is said to be Adhidaiva?

Verse 2 -
Who is Adhiyajna in the body & how is He the Adhiyajna? O Krishna, how are You to be known at the time of death by those of steadfast mind?

Verse 3 -
The Lord said: The Supreme Indestructible Entity is called Brahman; one’s own self is called adhyatma. Actions pertaining to the material personality of living beings and its development are called karma, or fruitive activities.

Meanings of verses 4, 5, 6 -

Verse 4
O best of the embodied souls, the physical manifestation that is constantly changing is called Adhibhuta; the universal form of God, which presides over the celestial gods in this creation, is called Adhidaiva; I, who dwell in the heart of every living being, am called Adhiyajna, or the Lord of all sacrifices.

Verse 5 -
Those who relinquish the body while remembering Me at the moment of death will come to Me. There is certainly no doubt about this.

Verse 6 -
Whatever one remembers upon giving up the body at the time of death, O son of Kunti, one attains that state, being always absorbed in such contemplation.

Story of JadaBharata
Attached to a deer
Remembered it at death
Reborn as a deer
Shows power of final thought

Ch. 8 verses – 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6

Theme -

Brahman – God (Parak – perceived as far away, actually very close to us)
Adhyatma – Atman (Pratyak – near)
Karma – Action
Adhibhuta – Matter around us
Adhidaiva – Individual
Adhiyajna – Spirit

• Sun (Brahman) → sun rays (matter) → mirror (Adhidaiva) → reflected sun (Adhiyajna)

• Vāsanā → thought → desire → action → cycle of birth/death

• Action → perform obligatory duties
Avoid prohibitory actions and regulate/balance materialistic duties (acquiring wealth, etc.)

• Matter is perishable & is made of the 5 elements

• Individual = BMI + Jivatma

• Spirit = Jivatma = reflection of the Atman

• Krishna addressed Arjuna as “Best of the Embodied.”

Five obligatory duties –

1. Brahma Yajna – Duty to knowledge & sages
2. Pitr Yajna – Duty to ancestors
3. Deva Yajna – Duty to the divine forces – puja, prayers, lighting lamp, etc.
4. Bhuta Yajna – Duty to all living beings – taking care of nature & environment
5. Manushya Yajna – Duty to fellow humans – charity, seva

Houdini Example
Couldn’t escape a room because it wasn’t locked when he was expecting a lock.
We are also in such a locked room. We are looking for knowledge everywhere, but Brahman is right beside us. Knowledge is right there, free for us.

Purse Story
Wealth hidden under thief’s pillow

We search outside for Brahman, but it is within us.
