Krishna Gati (Moon Path/ Dakshinayan): Path of Return. • This path is just a representation of Ignorance: If you are ignorant of who you really are, you will go to the path of return. • Happens when our actions are desire/ attachment based. E.g.: Performing Pujas to get something. • Baggage of Vasanas that you carry will be with you when you come back • Note that rebirth doesn’t guarantee a good/ fulfilling or a life that offers less suffering
Shukla Gati (Sun Path/ Uttarayan): • Path of No Return to Brahma Lokha, in the presence of other accomplished Aatmas. Typically happens when your actions are unselfish/ unattached (Nishikamakarna). Eventually you merge into the Brahman (Krama Mukti)
• Another path in the Sun Path is for the Mahatmas (Like Adi Shankaracharya, Ramakrishna Paramahansa): They act as a guide/ teacher for all other human beings and are gifts from gods. They have completely surrendered to the Lord and lived the life of a Jivan Mukta Purusha. They merge with the Brahman immediately and attain Moksha. This is called Kaivalya mukti.
Some Q&A: Q. Arjuna’s question: What if I fall short on attaining Mukti in this life: I haven’t done enough Karmas to help me go to Heaven? Ans: A point of motivation for us: In Chapter 6/7, Bhagvan has told that whatever progress we make towards the Sun Path will not go a waste, we will be able to continue in the next life.
Q. On the Right most path, once you merge with Brahman. What happens when the next day begins? Ans: It can only happen when all of your actions will be to benefit society/ other living beings because you no longer identify with just yourself: Everything you do is in the service of god. Once you merge with the Brahman, there is no coming back as all the Sanchita Karma has been cleared. The entity that was the person before doesn’t exist anymore.
A note that Shankarabashya is much easier to understand. Shankaracharya has given us detailed explanations of the Gita. The class ended with closing prayers.
